Whale Watch with the experts and Learn the Language of the Whales with Whale Watch Western Australia and let us be your interpreters for the day. During every tour onboard we enjoy the opportunity to teach our guests about the life story of the Humpback Whale and interpret the behaviours we observe everyday. A cool breeze ruffled the oceans surface as we departed Fremantle and we knew that it was going to be an action packed morning of activity as we observed the energy amongst multiple pods. The calves began the breaching as they communicated towards each other and being so young these calves are practicing the importance of each behaviour as breaching, tail lobbing and fluke slapping was observed.
The females allowed their calves to communicate amongst each other as they also joined in to encourage them. Our attention then shifted to further pods of boisterous adults gathering and the intention of their surface activity was not just practice, it had important meaning. Launching into huge breaching and head lunging we had two bachelor males showing off to a female they had just found. Looking carefully in one of the images taken by our onboard research photographer you can see a big pec slap with a full body lunge in the distance, a perfect example of just how far the sound of this language can travel for the whales. It was a most spectacular morning as the two males and female began to take off in a competition pod as distant mother and calves responded to the higher energy with some breaching and head lunging of their own.
