Whale Watching Fremantle on a lovely spring Saturday with curious and boisterous Humpback Whales is a perfect way to spend some time on the weekend. Aboard both our morning and afternoon departure we found very calm sighting grounds with a few pods scattered over big distances. All pods were young, curious juveniles and sub adults who were all very interested in what was happening around them today. During this time of the southern migration we enjoy the company of this social age group who always seem to have a bit of time free for some fun as they socialise and mingle in the waters off Fremantle. One whale in particular this morning was extremely curious while investigating the Steep Point closely before the pods just ahead began to breach and pec slap to gain the attention of a third pod nearby.
The afternoon tour was very similar with one whale causing a big fuss with dominant tail lobs to establish his spot in the social hierarchy before joining with another pod of two. All four Humpback Whales then swam directly towards the Steep Point and proceeded to play with plenty of twisting, rolling and spy hopping amongst them all. A very flirty female was in the mix as she would roll over and show us her enormous white belly along with the hemispheric lobe located on her lower belly confirming she was female. It is always incredible to be so close to wild whales and see the trust they have with us, during these encounters on calm days it is wonderful to just be adrift with them as they surround the vessel and take charge of the interaction. Velcro whales is a good term for these pods as they seem to cling to the boat with curious eyes wide open as they look back our way. Yet another beautiful day out on the Indian Ocean in the company of such beautiful whales and wonderful Pod Members aboard.
