See Whales from Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour

Whale Watch Western Australia

See whales from Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour through September to November as we sight the spectacular southern Humpback Whale migration. It was another beautiful day out on the water and departing Fremantle we could see all the way out to the horizon which was a good thing as there was a commotion of white water just up ahead! Cruising towards the pod we could observe four juvenile Humpback Whales tail lobbing, tail slapping and pec slapping as it appeared they had just recently joined together and were getting to know each other. The still conditions made for a very loud impact as 20+ thousand kilograms came crashing back down and landed with a mighty thud. Breaching and head lunging was observed from two other pods a distance away but it didn’t interfere with these cheeky and curious juveniles.

Approaching our vessel they were incredibly interested as they swam around us repeatedly with plenty of excitable and noisy exhalations which is referred to as trumpeting. Very loud in the still conditions and always lovely to hear the excitement from the Humpback Whales when they are in this playful mood. It was a lovely day out on the water which completed with good news from the DBCA team who were successful in disentangling our Humpback Whale sighted from yesterday and incredibly one other whale as well! During yesterdays search the team from Fremantle Sea Rescue and the Rottnest Island Rangers located a whale that had an entanglement but after the team from DBCA secured the satellite buoy it was looking likely this was a second whale which turned out to be very true as today both entangled Humpbacks were freed after a full day working with them. An incredible effort and we cannot thank the team from DBCA, Fremantle Sea Rescue and Rottnest Island Rangers for responding so quickly after the initial contact which provided these whales a fighting chance of rescue and the hard work by all involved, thank you.
