Perth Whales

Whale Watch Western Australia

Perth Whales are making the most of the beautiful weather we are currently experiencing in Perth over the last few days as we had the opportunity of interacting with a cheeky bachelor pod today. A light southerly ruffled the waters surface which was a refreshing sea breeze with the warmth level in each day slowly increasing. Initially we observed two seperate pods with two big males moving towards the more elusive two who made a beeline for one of the large ships moored in Gage Roads. The boys seemed very keen in wanting to approach the second pod but that higher energy wasn’t something the second pod was interested in as they used the ship as a distraction swimming towards it and then around to assist them in disorientating the bachelor pod. It worked well as the quieter two made a break towards Rottnest Island while the bachelor boys were checking us out.

Meandering around the area for a while both of the males were going over the same area the secondary pod had just swam through but had lost track of them. Still in a playful mood they came over to check us out again and completed a few rather impressive tail stands as the biggest male slowly lifted his fluke upwards until it almost reached his bellybutton. It was repeated a few times which made us smile, what a cheeky boy as he messed about with his mate while passing some time. It was a shame they couldn’t reach the other pod in time as they were both in a very social mood but that was most likely the reason why the other whales were so keen on not joining them otherwise they might have been socialising for hours! A few more curious spy hops were enjoyed as they slowly shuffled towards Stragglers Reef in preparation for their departure from the resting grounds. Perth whales are moving through in good numbers with plenty more of the mature adults expected in the coming days to visit our stretch of the coast.
