The best Whale Watching in Australia has to be right here in Perth, Western Australia. It was an incredible day with the whales today as they showcased the very best of whale watching and the Language of the Whales with non-stop surface activity for both our morning and midday tour. Our first tour started off with a lone female breaching and pec slapping to try and call in some males to escort her down the coast, when that didn’t work she went into huge body lunges followed by more breaching. Another lone female a few hundred meters away started up as well trying to call out with more breaches and pec slaps, it was incredible. We love this time of season as we start to see the adults coming through and when they want to be active it is one of the most amazing sights to see an adult Humpback launch their entire body clear of the water below in a powerful breach. The sheer size of these beautiful animals never ceases to amaze us, they truly are in our minds the eighth wonder of the world. It didn’t stop with the females though as we sighted a very energetic calf breaching and head lunging not far from where we were so we headed over to him.
As we arrived he got very excited that he now had an audience, a huge breach and head lunges towards us as he showed his dominance. He was the same beautiful black bellied calf we had met yesterday as with all this breaching we had an even better view of him with his full black body and only the underside of his pec fins being white. The best whale watching in Australia continued during our midday tour as yet another mum and calf launched into full body breaching and pec slapping. Surface activity could be sighted all around as multiple pods both near and far called out to each other and communicated in spectacular fashion. At one point we observed four separate pods calling out with breaching, head lunging and pec slapping all in unison. One mother breached her way towards us as her calf launched into full body barrel role breaches to keep up before some very cute and high energy head lunges followed. Days like today showcase our incredible whales that we have the opportunity of welcoming and spending time with in the waters off the coast of Perth. Still a few weeks left for the southern migration and we cannot wait to welcome the last of the mums and bubs and enjoy their company before summer arrives.
