Perth Blue Whale Season 2025 begins in spectacular fashion as a picture perfect autumn day escorted us to the Perth Canyon where on our arrival six beautiful Blue Whales welcomed us to the feeding grounds. It is always a very special season as we enjoy observing and learning about the incredible Blue Whales as they stop in for a few weeks of feasting in the nutrient rich and krill filled waters of the Perth Canyon. Today was a great example of just how important these feeding grounds are for our giant visitors as all six Blues were busy feasting with plenty of deep foraging dives resulting in spectacular tail dives. Three of the individuals were closest to us as they worked the grounds and at one point had converged to within fifty meters of each other as the larger individual moved out with the second and third Blue following each other closely.
Courtship behaviour is often observed during our Perth Canyon Blue Whale season as they approach their breeding and calving months of the year. The feeding grounds are a perfect location for them to not only feed but meet other Blue Whales as they arrive in the area and feed up over a couple of weeks before continuing northbound to the Banda Sea. Today it appeared that amongst all the busy foraging there was plenty of socialising going on as well. Every whale has a unique personality and with some individuals more outgoing than others it is interesting to watch how they respond to the approach of curious individuals. Blue Whales are an incredibly peaceful species to work with and although they are our worlds largest creature when we are with them there is a wonderful calm energy which can hide their extraordinary size and strength due to their effortless movements. It was a wonderful start to the season and fantastic to see so many Blue Whales feasting and enjoying their time in the Perth Canyon.
