Australian Blue Whale tours are a wonderful opportunity to meet the largest creature to have ever lived on our planet as another four beautiful Blues were observed today. Cruising past Rottnest Island we were first greeted by the fantastic Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins who were excited to see us as they raced towards our bow. It was good to see them enjoying their time as we continued on and up ahead was the tall and distinctive blow of the Blue Whales. Surfacing gracefully amongst the calm weather conditions today we were excited to see not just one but two Blue Whales feeding in this pocket of the foraging grounds. Working with precision they continued their circular pattern of movement before rounding out in deep feeding dives and showing off their incredibly large flukes.
The sleek profile of a Blue Whale fluke is beautiful to observe as the movement of a round out dive results in an impressive waterfall as it falls away after being lifted skyward by the seven meter wide fluke. It was fantastic to see both Blue Whales spending a few hours feeding consistently in this area as the spectacular fluke dives ensured they propelled downwards to the krill which is so important for them. A strong appetite means that on a good day these Blue Whales can happily consume one to three thousand kilograms of krill which helps prepare them for the long journey north. It is always a remarkable moment to be with a Blue Whale, they are one of the most elusive species to observe in the wild and so few people on the planet have had the opportunity of meeting them. Truely a wonder of this world, a Blue Whales immense size creates a presence everywhere they go and working with two Blues within a couple of hundred meters of each other today feeding peacefully was a wonderful experience. During our return journey home a further two Blue Whales were observed numbering four individuals for us today and our final interaction was with the very playful Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins who were once again very keen on some bow and wake riding.
