The Best Time to See Whales in Augusta?

Whale Watch Western Australia

The Best Time to See Whales in Augusta? The very best time is late May through to early August as thousands of Humpbacks Whales on their northern migration stop in to visit Flinders Bay. Today we enjoyed a pleasant winter afternoon as we made our way out towards multiple pods gathering close to the most south western point of Australia. A true pivot point of the migration, everyday hundreds of whales travel past Cape Leeuwin and navigate onwards to warmer waters. One young whale in particular was rather boisterous today as the youngster approached to investigate and his energy levels quickly increased. Drifting with him we were amazed to witness an incredible display of peduncle slaps, inverted tail slapping and plenty of excitable trumpets. He became even more confident and came closer and closer with the huge sound of his body landing on the waters surface clear to hear.

It is this sound the Humpback Whales aim to produce as they communicate the Language of the Whales and today we had an incredible example of this spectacular language. Diving so close to us, Arry was able to capture a few moments on the GoPro and amongst all the action was a large school of busy Herring moving gracefully. Further pods nearby responded with a spectacular breach just of South East Rocks while our youngster continued on with further communication. It was a very special interaction and by drifting with this young male Humpback we were able to build a trust with him, his confidence soared and he was within meters of us as he had the most wonderful time interacting and communicating. Further pods approached but he continued to stay with us, we hoped that soon another young whale will move into the area and be a suitable friend for this outgoing character. Wishing him well for his journey ahead we were surrounded by rain that fell around us and as we arrived back in the Augusta Boat Harbour it cleared perfectly, a wonderful way to complete another incredible day with the whales in Augusta.
