State of Origin Whales

Whale Watch Western Australia

Perth will proudly host the second game of the State of Origin tonight and it was more than just the players and nation feeling competitive as our Humpback Whales joined in on the fun. It was a lovely afternoon as we made our way out to the sighting grounds with many Humpback Whale pods on the move and making the most of the pleasant weather conditions as they moved efficiently and northbound. A couple of pods were a bit competitive as challenger males pursued females and their protective escorts did well to defend their female from the cheeky males. A busy time of the year for these bachelor males who spend theirs days of the migration searching for females, competing and then repeating the process for the next few months. If they are fortunate they will be fathers to multiple calves next season, but not every competition pod that they join will end in success.

Today we could clearly see the escort males doing their job well to protect and defend the females they were travelling with to ensure no challenger males would interfere. One heavily pregnant female surfaced nearby and we could hear her heavy breathing and steady surfacing as she methodically moved towards the bay for a quick rest before the next stage of her journey north to warmer waters. Another female was looking for a suitable mate as she launched into spectacular breaching and pec slapping to call in the bachelor males nearby. It was beautiful to watch as a moody sky set the perfect scene for her surface language display and on our return to the harbour an incredible double rainbow stretched out across Flinders Bay. It is an exciting evening for all NRL supporters across Australia as the State of Origin brings together the best of the best competitors right here in Perth as our very best competing Humpback Whales move along our coastline, what a fantastic time to be in Western Australia! GO QUEENSLAND !!!!
