Margaret River Whales

Whale Watch Western Australia

Margaret River Whales can be observed a short thirty minute drive to beautiful Augusta from June to August as the annual northern migration gets underway. It was a busy Flinders Bay this morning with multiple pods greeting us on our arrival and with so many whales in the bay it was only a matter of time before things became competitive. Bachelor males charged after escort pods in an attempt to impress the females as we had three seperate competition pods form at the same time this morning. White water, trumpeting and plenty of hustle is observed amongst these comp pods as the boys moved fiercely to keep up with each other and move closest to the female. It appeared that most of the primary male escorts did a great job in maintaining their position and keeping the females they had been travelling with even though the bachelor males all put in much effort in their challenges this morning.

Our afternoon tour was a similar energy level with multiple pods moving through and things were busy with the Language of the Whales as breaching, head lunging, pec slapping and tail lobs erupted all around. A couple of pods in particular were very keen on sending a strong message as they launched into enormous breaching jus off our bow, it was spectacular! Counting the whales we were observing this afternoon the number was closing in on over 100 individuals with many more pods surface active on the horizon. It certainly is a very busy time of the year for the northern migration and a thrill to see so many Humpback Whales enjoying their time here in Augusta. The peak breeding months are in the weeks ahead so the intensity levels amongst the whales continues to grow each and every da. If you are looking for the best location to see the Margaret River Whales then definitely head over to Augusta and witness the epic northern Humpback Whale migration currently underway.
