Meaning of Humpback whale breaching is varied and this Language of the Whales must be interpreted at the time to understand the conversation. Today we enjoyed observing much spectacular breaching amongst numerous pods as they lit up Flinders Bay. Our first pods were on the move and covering ground with some boisterous individuals tail lobbing, tail slapping and pursuing each other which kept things interesting amongst the pods. All managed to maintain enough of a reactionary distance from each other, but a couple of bachelors joined together and formed larger pods as they moved towards the reef line. A sudden explosion of energy up ahead captured our attention as the first pod began to launch themselves into huge, full body breaching. This type of activity is often used to attract the attention of other whales nearby and it certainly worked as further pods joined in on the conversation. Back and forth the breaching went as each seperate pod took their turn in communicating and it was clear to see they were all competing for the attention of other whales nearby and directing movements of these pods.
It was brilliant to watch as five seperate pods launched and to see this many whales communicating all at once is always very special and certainly gets the adrenaline flowing! Even on our journey back through the bay we could see the increased energy of those first pods had flowed on to the others as they too began to breach. One younger whale was trying to attract a friend as she began to breach and pec slap around us with a response from nearby pods. Beautiful to watch and a great example of how this type of breaching is used as a callout to other whales in the area, it was working! All the other pods in a similar energy level were responding and it was a wonderful, wild afternoon of observing and leaning about the meaning of Humpback Whale breaching with plenty of fantastic examples of this spectacular part of the Language of the Whales. A big shoutout to one of our Pod Members Noi and her friend Khoon for joining us today. Noi has been following our Daily Whale for a very long time and loyally keeps up to date with all the sightings and interactions. We are so grateful as a family for Pod Members like Noi who are the driving force behind our efforts, and we are committed to delivering the best possible experience for our much loved and appreciated Pod Members. A pleasure to have met you both and we hope to enjoy many more whale watching journeys together, thank you for all your support.
