Rottnest Island Whale Watch Experience

Whale Watch Western Australia

Rottnest Island Whale Watch Experience was exciting today with many Humpback Whales enjoying g the picture perfect conditions as a wonderful day of different interactions were observed. A big blue sky and calm sea this morning was a very different day from last Sunday, it certainly feels more like spring this weekend and with the increasing temperatures we will start to see a stronger flow of whales migrating south. It was an amazing morning with a total of seventeen massive adults spread over two competition pods as they rumbled and trumpeted all around our vessel. The powerful movements were made to look effortless as they pivoted on a dime before disappearing underneath us and resurfacing in the other side. It was a dance amongst them all and incredible to see how much energy these whales are still willing to give for competition even this late in the migration season.

Our midday tour was amazingly a similar energy as we arrived to yet another competition pod underway. These will be some of the last bachelor males making their way south before the majority of pods we observe are mothers and calves. The boys are making the most of every last opportunity to find a female companion for the long journey back towards Antarctica. The number of solo female whales travelling south currently if far less than the number of bachelor males so competition is intense as the boys try their best to impress the girls and fight off any escort male she may already be travelling with. It was more pushing, shoving and jostling for position as the boys did all they could to impress the female who encouraged them with a couple of flirty pec slaps. Nearby pods were more defensive and determined to keep any of the curious bachelor males away with dominant tail lobs and inverted tail slaps lightning up the waters around us and out towards the horizon.

The afternoon tour was a glow with the lovely sunshine we enjoyed right throughout today and how wonderful it was to have yet again another competition pod! The bachelor boys were busy pursuing a female through the sighting grounds and as they did we watched on as over half a dozen other pods reacted with tail lobs and tail slapping. The Language of the Whales was strong as it flowed amongst the pods and it was a great reflection of just how special the listening capabilities are of our Humpback Whales to be able to hear each other and respond with that spectacular communication. Travelling with the competition pod they flew through the sighting grounds which made for a very enjoyable journey as we watched them move effortlessly but with great power and precision. It was a marvellous day out on the water with many birthday celebrations as well, thank you to all our Pod Members for choosing to Join The Pod for your special occasions and celebrate with the incredible Western Australian Humpback Whales!
