Humpback Whale Experience

Whale Watch Western Australia

Humpback Whale Experience was wonderful today as our morning began with over fifty adult whales spread over multiple pods competing, midday tour of gorgeous mum and bubs before the afternoon saw the adults light up the sighting grounds with the Language of the Whales. Our first interaction this morning was with a mum and her gorgeous calf as they came over to say hello curiously. She was approaching another mum and calf pod and closing in the distance but a commotion a few hundred meters away caused them to maintain a low profile and soon we found out why. Multiple pods were converging and we were amazed to see over fifty adult Humpback Whales within four hundred meters of each other spread over multiple pods and high energy! The many bachelor boys who had just arrived were now pursuing females and amongst all the commotion we found ourselves right in the very middle. Diving underneath and around us the males came in so very close as they would join one pod then divert over to another, it was brilliant to watch unfold.

Our midday tour began with a lovely mum, calf and her protective escort as they moved through the sighting grounds in a curious mood. The calf was busy with a tail lob here and there as they seemed on the lookout for other pods nearby to approach. A second mum and calf were on the move but the male escort caused the approaching mum to change her mind and decide to continue on by themselves. The original pod were now approaching a sleeping mum and calf her were logging at the surface ahead of them as they approached in stealth mode. Eventually the sleeping pod did notice them once they were within 100 meters and she submerged and moved away. A final escort pod of a male and female arrived on scene and began to tail lob or pec slap which was the perfect way to complete our midday tour.

The afternoon was all about the adults as our first pod of four high bachelor males surfaced and came over to say hello. All very curious and interested in us, it was very exciting to have the opportunity of spending some time with these lovely males. Enjoying some social time they were busy chasing each other with a few wrestle moves to show off their strength before resuming the lookout for females. It was great fun and a wonderful time to be part of the bachelor pod as we noticed two others pods a bit further ahead. Suddenly, the ocean erupted in white water as the pod of two began to breach, pec slap and tail lob over and over in the late afternoon sun. The nearby whale responded with a few tail lobs and approached as the closer each pod came towards each other the more energy we could see in the surface language. It was spectacular and the perfect way to complete our day with the Humpback Whale experience.
