Language of the Whales Extravaganza

Whale Watch Western Australia

Language of the Whales extravaganza it was today as onboard all three tours we observed spectacular surface activity and communications amongst countless pods moving through the sighting grounds. Departing the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, we had some wind and rain showers expected throughout the day and it was set to feel a little more like winter than spring, but our team and Pod Members were excited for the day ahead! It was a rewarding and thrilling start to the day as within moments of arriving in the sighting grounds we were surrounded by three seperate pods launching themselves skywards with breaching, head lunging, tail slapping and more breaching all around us as the mothers, calves and some escort males all joined in with the conversation. It was nearly an hour straight of surface language, brilliant to observe and eventually towards the end of our tour they started to settle down and begin to relax after a huge morning of exercise and activity.

Our midday tour was just as much fun with more breaching and pec slapping but this time from mumma whale who was calling out to the other pods in the area for some friendly social time. A response did come from other pods and it was wonderful to see the conversations flowing before they all started to settle back in for an afternoon siesta. The afternoon tour was very much similar theme with multiple pods gathering and communicating, a few pods resting and one pod in particular very interested in us as mother, calf and her protective male escort swam circles around us with much interest. The baby launched into a chilly head lunge with mouth open and white water flying before coming back over for another look at us, they were such a special pod to spend some time with on this cosy afternoon. A very active day for our whales and fantastic to see so many pods gathering now with lots of babies, an exciting and exhilarating day we all enjoyed and cannot wait to get back out there again tomorrow!
