Double Kill in the Canyons

Whale Watch Western Australia

Today, our Bremer Bay Orcas were in full hunting mode as we ventured into the canyons to the east of The Patch. A group of 30-40 Orcas surged forward at high speed, propelled by the morning westerlies, in pursuit of a juvenile or possibly a calf Beaked Whale. The Orcas’ remarkable ability to hunt not only across vast ocean distances but also at various depths is a true testament to their strength, discipline, and expertise. We feel privileged to learn from these apex predators, having spent over 10,000 hours observing their behaviours throughout the past decade.

The first hunt was orchestrated by the younger members of the pod which was consumed fairly quickly as the older animals allowed them to share and contest with the meal. We then retreated into the breeze and swell as they established another F.L.O.T line, this time extending from the edge of the continental shelf to the midsection of The Patch. As the action slowed, we sensed that the hunt was still active. Soon, the ocean came alive again with surging Orcas; B-Slice made a significant hit closer to the shelf, and as we approached the scene, we discovered another Beaked Whale. This one was larger and potentially more concerning, as it might have been a mother and calf pair, or perhaps another Beaked Whale swimming alongside the initial casualty.

We spent some time with Cheryl’s Pod as they shared the meal among themselves, with many mouths to feed. They relished the time spent replenishing the energy expended during the hunt. B-Slice swam toward our vessel, proudly displaying the prized troph —the beak of the whale, indicative of a successful hunt. Typically, the matriarch or her females are responsible for carrying the food, but it was evident that B-Slice, a dominant male, was in charge of the meal. The calves and younger pod members repeatedly approached him for a share, and he generously distributed pieces of food he could have consumed quickly on his own. This heartwarming scene illustrates the selfless relationships these magnificent animals share, highlighting the importance of family within the pod, much like we aim to do as a family-operated business in the great country of Australia.

Happy Australia Day, everyone!
