Hunting Bremer Canyon Killer Whales are always on the move and today was a great example of just how far they will travel in search of food as spectacular Striped Dolphins and remains of an enormous Giant Squid were witnessed on the travel path. It is always a very interesting time of the year as we cover more ground than usual as the Killer Whales expand their search range with the change of season. Our first sighting was of a much smaller but very beautiful dolphin species as they hurtled their way across the oceans surface. Striped Dolphins were flying in as this super pod of 500+ individuals raced towards us with much excitement and enthusiasm. All age groups could be observed as they enjoyed a spot of bow riding and breaching with one adult showing off an impressive body slam with the noise so loud causing other pod members to react with surface language of their own. A beautiful start to our morning as we continued our search for the much larger cousins of these Striped Dolphins.
A large gathering of Shearwaters and Albatross attracted our attention as we moved in for a closer look and to our amazement it was the remains of a Giant Squid, one year exactly to the day from when we sighted one back in Season 2025! Remarkable to see that the tentacles and mantle had been consumed with some evidence of shark bites also present. A great opportunity to make the comparison from one year to the next and the wounds of the Giant Squid similar as well, perhaps there is a bit more activity from these mysterious ocean giants during this time of the year. A short time afterwards the likely culprits of the Giant Squid kill appeared, it was the Bremer Canyon Killer Whales! Kidji and her family were westbound and it was so good to see them all especially big boys Hookfin and Chalky. Moving together with them in the still autumn weather was peaceful and we love these opportunities to learn more about the movements of our Killer Whales during this time of the year. Travelling with the experts means our family team never stops learning and every day is another day to further our experience and knowledge of the incredible Killer Whales and the waters they call home.
