Perth Winter Whales on a beautiful winter’s day were beautiful today as one Humpback in particular was calling out with brilliant breaching and pec slapping before the Bottlenose Dolphins arrived to feed nearby. Arriving to a busy scene as a lone female Humpback Whale was putting on a spectacular display as she called out in search of a mate. Breaching consecutively, she would then followup with pec slapping before resuming back to breaching again. Continuing on like this she was covering ground and communicating clearly to every other whale in the area her intention to find a friend.
Surfacing right on our bow we were all surprised to see a tiny yearling pop up out of the blue! The little one seemed to have heard all the commotion and came over to check what was going on before becoming a little shy after realising our female breacher was a bit older and bigger in comparison to the yearling. Responding with some defensive inverted tail slaps, the yearling was doing a good job of communicating it wanted to maintain that reactionary distance and after this defensive little display moved in the opposite direction.
Our female followed briefly before deciding to continue calling out instead with more breaching and pec slapping, a couple of other pods were in the area but all were resting quietly. Although our beautiful girl had tried hard for a long time to call in a buddy, she now decided to conserve her energy instead while waiting for further Humpbacks to arrive in the area, maybe then her perfect companion will be found. Nearby the local Bottlenose Dolphins were busy foraging and it was so lovely to see all their cute little faces and small oil slicks they were leaving behind while enjoying some lunch with he family. A very special winters day and although there is still a winters chill in the air we can sense the change of season is just around the corner!
