Freo whale watching with the Humpbacks today was lovely as a chilled pod of three bachelors enjoyed their afternoon while an escort pod was busy with surface language. A few more easterly winds are about at the moment which has been sending out a few extra butterflies and insects out at sea which is always an interesting sight and generally indicates after a long winter that spring is certainly here! A few pods had arrived in the sighting grounds today and one in particular was very relaxed as three enormous bachelor males all surfaced together. Lifting each fluke elegantly, they would dive back down for some rest time after what would have been a big swim from the north to reach this stretch of coastline. They were not even bothered by another pod who swam past daily closely as all seemed content with the current reactionary distance in-between them.
One other resting pod was startled however and we suspect it was potentially further shark activity as the response was very much the same as yesterday. Launching into powerful tail lobs, inverted fluke slapping and a couple of hammers thrown in for good measure, both whales worked together and created an enormous sound. A great way to clear out the area if a shark has been following you and one of the whales also did a few pec slaps, perhaps hopeful to get a few more pods around them to continue keeping a close eye on any predators in the area. Freo whale watching is always interesting each and every day as with each passing hour more whales arrive while others depart and the epic Humpback Whale migration is a 24/7 rhythm for the next couple of months ahead.
