Perth Southern Right Whale sighting today was a thrill to meet one of the most endangered whale species in Australian waters while a rambunctious Humpback competition pod also rumbled past. A stunning day out on the water as the morning winds had eased and we soaked in what was our warmest day in a very long time, spring is certainly here! A female Humpback Whale had the attention of two competitive males who chased her around the entire time we spent with them which must have been tiring for all involved. The boys pushed and shoved to get closest to the female as she calmly led them on the chase and amongst all the commotion a pinkly surfacing appeared a short distance away which caught our attention.
A second surfacing confirmed our suspicions as a distinctive rostrum broke the surface with the creamy white callosities clear to see, we had the company of a curious Southern Right Whale! It was so very exciting to see this beautiful whale surface, with so few in the population every sighting of these whales is precious and special especially in the waters off Perth. Typically the Southern Right Whales will linger along our south coast, but as the populations slowly grows we can start to see them expanding their range and exploring our coastlines. It was such a wonderful surprise and a fantastic opportunity for our Pod Members onboard to see two different whale species that are so important to the west Australian coastline. Wishing our special Southern Right well, we rejoined back with the competition pod to say our farewells to them as the competition pod continued to rumble on into the afternoon.
