Whale watching Perth during October is an exciting time to witness the incredible Humpback Whale migration as today we were surrounded with spectacular activity amongst the pods. It firstly began with mums and calves socialising together with some breaching from the babies and tail slapping from the mums. It is great to watch these social interactions amongst the young calves as they perfect their skillset with plenty of practice. The little ones were so excited to play and socialise together before their mums gently guided them along the way towards further pods beginning to converge.
One bachelor pod exploded to life with incredible breaching and flirty pec slapping as they worked hard to gain attention from all of the other whales in the area. A nearby calf began to respond with breaching as further pods within a couple of hundred meters also returned the call with surface language of their own. The boys were excited as they breached and pec slapped their way towards the breaching calf whose mum they seemed very interested in meeting. Suddenly an enormous tail lob was quickly followed by tail slapping as two adults surfaced and very quickly it was clear to see that the mother whale already had a protective male escort travelling with her and he was not interested in these boys getting any closer.
It didn’t matter though as directly behind the males and a mother Humpback and her calf had been following them and took this opportunity to draw their attention. The calf leapt high in big breaching and the boys excitedly spun round and began to pec slap again towards this pod that had snuck up behind them without being noticed. The mother was seeking a male escort to protect her and her calf on the journey south and it was interesting to watch as the breaching male approached and joined with this mum and calf with no fuss or competition from his pod mate. He instead moved off towards the other pods and we are confident with so many whales around today he will not have any troubles in finding a lovely female Humpback Whale to approach and protect as well.
