Fremantle Southern Humpback Migration

Whale Watch Western Australia
Fremantle southern Humpback migration is welcoming the last of the mother and calf pods over the next couple of weeks as they takeover the sighting grounds. A light easterly ruffled the waters surface and we could see sleepy mums and their calves dotted all around us as they each tried to locate the most suitable spot for resting. It was peaceful and clear to see why these grounds are so popular for the visiting Humpback Whales as they have sheltered, protected waters in which to spend time in with their calf. Resting is paramount and especially for the mother whale who has not fed since she left Antarctica every ounce of fat reserves she has remaining will be needed to ensue her safe passage back to the feeding grounds.

The pods shuffled around each other this morning as they tried to not encroach on the other mums spot and it was interesting to watch their movements as they taught their calves how to politely interact and respect other whales within your vicinity. The midday tour was a very similar theme as pods rested, but the local Rottnest Bottlenose Dolphins arrived on scene and change that! A few powerful tail lobs from one mum was observed as the dolphins moved past and they socialised with the whales before heading our way to say hello. A second mum then launched into powerful tail lobs and tail slaps as her calf followed up with full body breaching which enabled us the opportunity to see he was a boy. A lovely time of the year as we enjoy the last couple of weeks with our Fremantle southern Humpback migration.
