Dancing whales this morning observed two social adults diving into a pirouette of fun as they enjoyed each others company while the midday tour observed beautiful conditions and restful pods. It was a brisk breeze this morning that ruffled the waters surface but did not disguise the distinctive long pectoral fins of an adult Humpback Whale pec slapping. Calling in the attention their way, the pod of two were relaxed and very curious as we approached. The pec slapping continued but as the other pods remained further away the attention seeking turned towards our vessel instead. A big tail lob communicated they would be leading the interaction and they then proceeded to swim directly towards the bow. Surfacing right alongside us they were so excited with noisy trumpets as they began to dive and play around our vessel.
Watching them dance together was beautiful and to see how elegant they were in their movement is always impressive for such large creatures. The midday tour sighted the morning breeze ease and a gentle cloud cover create a lovely warm afternoon with many a butterfly and bug making its way onboard for respite after being blown off the coast earlier in the morning! Our first pod was a very relaxed and friendly mum, calf and escort who were cruising slowly through the protected waters. It was wonderful to see a male Humpback escort today as the boys are getting less and less as we move through the last couple of weeks of the season. The second pod was mum and calf who had found the perfect spot to rest quietly away from the others as the little one seemed interested in some floating seaweed. Each tour is proving very unique over the last few days with distinctive energy changes amongst the pods as further whales arrive and other pods depart.
