Today marks the last day of winter and after three amazing months in beautiful Augusta, Western Australia we are now saying goodbye after another wonderful year of whale watching in Flinders Bay! This season in Augusta brought many surprises and spectacular moments that will be remembered for a very long time and we would like to thank all of the wonderful people of Augusta for all of your support.
The Epic Northern Humpback Whale migration we sight every year brings with it many competition pods and incredible surface activity as the males compete for the attention of the females in Flinders Bay. This high paced energy now changes as our Humpbacks go from their reptilian side of their brain (compete and conquer!) into their mammalian mindset as mothers return with new calves and the interactions can be very intimate on the Southern Humpback Whale migration which all begins tomorrow on the first day of Spring.
We had the opportunity to meet five brand new additions to the Southern Right Whale population and season 2017 also brought one of our earliest sightings of Southern Right Whales in Flinders Bay when a large female arrived in late June. A very big thank you to the wonderful team from Murdoch University who have been completing some fantastic work studying the Humpbacks and Southern Rights Whales in Flinders Bay and it was wonderful to have them working with the visiting whales this season. We are very much looking forward to the southern migration and grateful for another marvellous season in Augusta… we will see you again next year!
