January signalled the beginning of what was set to be a record breaking season for Whale Watch Western Australia and the Bremer Bay Orca. A season filled with beautiful weather, magnificent Orca and the wonderful company and friendship of the Bremer Bay community, we certainly are very blessed! The Orca started off the year in early January with consistent and spectacular interactions as unique sightings of the season included an enormous 5.5 meter Great White Shark, Eagle Ray, a tiny Fairy Penguin bobbing out in the Bremer Canyon and a very rare encounter with a Southern Bottlenose Whale mother and her brand new calf. Pilot Whales, Sperm Whales and Beaked Whales all made their regular appearance and it is always remarkable to sight these elusive cetaceans of the sea as they traverse the deeps of our offshore canyons. Wandering Albatross and their feathered friends including Shearwaters, Petrels and Gannets did a fantastic job as usual with their drone work of the sky and kept us close to the Orca action throughout the season. The friendly Australian Sea Lions, NZ Fur Seals, Common Dolphins and nesting Crested Terns kept the activity along the coastline busy and always entertaining as the next generation was observed to be borne and grow throughout the season, always a privilege to see.
A brand new addition to the Orca population in little Stormy was a very exciting discovery in the first few weeks of Season 2019 as her mother Flapper and Grandma Queen (the much loved matriarch aka Split Tip) took the most precise and loving care of their new pod member. To witness three generations of the same family and the possible future matriarch of Queen’s pod is very humbling and we are so excited to watch as little Stormy grows and develops in the season’s to come. Bremer Canyon Orca Season 2019 far exceeded our expectations and we would like to thank all of our wonderful guests for joining us this year, it was a pleasure to welcome you onboard to experience the magnificent Bremer Canyon and have you all Join The Pod!
Our season would not be the same without the support and friendship of the Bremer Bay community and we would like to thank you all for your continued support. It is a pleasure to live and work alongside Bremer Bay during our season and we are very proud of this magnificent Western Australian town and the extraordinary opportunities Bremer Bay provides to everyone wanting to witness Orca in the wild and enjoy the beauty of this stunning town. Season 2019 is dedicated in the loving memory of Cheryl Webb and we are very proud to say that one of the beautiful female Orca documented in Whale Watch Western Australia’s catalogue has been named in her honour, Whale Watch WA 02, field name Cheryl♥️
