Where to see whales in Perth during the spring? Fremantle is a perfect place to see the southern Humpback Whale migration and today we enjoyed the company of extremely curious, gentle giants. It was a beautiful morning and as we made our way to the sighting grounds a sudden splash and commotion began as the local Bottlenose Dolphins were happily feeding. Racing around after small fish, the Gannets and Crested Terns were also making the most of breakfast as they dived in front of the Dolphins while trying to capture the same fish. The calm conditions provided perfect visibility as multiple pods surfaced and we spent time getting to know them.
Relaxed and enjoying the resting grounds each pod shuffled around each other politely before a lone whale approached a pod just to our starboard side. Swimming towards our bow the whales pivoted and began to approach curiously. Moments later we were surrounded by three incredible whales immensely curious and approaching within a few feet of our vessel. It is always exhilarating to be this close to wild whales, especially curious individuals. Around and around they went, ever so gentle as the powerful flukes would be lifted gracefully before diving back underneath us once again. A great opportunity for Grace and her team at The Fat Whales Project to collect data on these individuals without needing to fly the drone too far at all from these intensely curious Humpback Whales. A beautiful spring day with the whales of Western Australia off the Perth coast.
