Augusta Humpback Whales 2023 reached its penultimate tour today and though a very rainy season on the Southwest coast a great season of Humpback activity with plenty of surface action as we taught hundreds of Pod members, the Language of the Whales.
Just outside the harbour this morning we were met by a very friendly Humpback juvenile in the bright sunshine and crisp easterly winds, our new mate spent over an hour interacting with our vessel rolling onto his back, exposing his underside so we could confirm he was a male due to the lack of the hemispherical lobe which only the females display.
Slowly moving to the west he continued to checkout our vessel to the delight of everyone onboard with extremely close passes under the bow and across our stern. Finally he moved into the pocket of the bay to what appeared to be to have a rest, we joined another pod for a short period only to have our new friend swim back over to our vessel and spend another 25 minutes frolicking around our vessel.
Tomorrow is our final tour for the Humpback northern migration for 2023 and we will head back to Fremantle for our southern Humpback migration that will see many newly minted 2023 Humpback Calves heading south for their first year in Antartica as they too Learn the Language & Ways of the Humpback Whale.
