Augusta Whale Watch today was absolutely fantastic! We were delighted to encounter several pods showcasing an incredible display of the Language of the Whales, highlighted by two individuals engaging in an energetic tail-slapping extravaganza. A light cloud cover hinted at the rain expected later in the evening, but our day remained dry with gentle winds, creating the ideal conditions for whale watching. Shortly after departing from Augusta Boat Harbour, Captain Ambrose spotted our first pod. We were thrilled to see two Humpback Whales launching into tail slaps and peduncle lobs. It was a breathtaking sight as they sent white water flying, creating quite a commotion for other whales to hear.
Then, the whales approached our bow, coming remarkably close as they continued their playful antics. A couple of tail lobs landed with a resounding thud. It’s always awe-inspiring to witness such surface language up close and to see the trust of these juvenile Humpback Whales.
After this wonderful encounter, they moved across the bay to continue their migration. We then joined another pod that was rolling and frolicking in the seaweed. The beautiful spy hops and a few barrel rolls at the surface revealed that these two were clearly enjoying themselves after their long journey from Antarctica. It has been wonderful to see these young juveniles really enjoying their time in Flinders Bay as they make the most of these sheltered and protected waters to rest, socialise and play before continuing northbound.
