Best Fremantle Whale Watching Tour is with Whale Watch Western Australia every September to November as we depart daily from Sardine Jetty in the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour to meet the southbound Humpback Whale migration. A cool southerly breeze ruffled the waters surface as we departed Fremantle and made our way out into the sighing grounds as enormous plumes of white water appeared further ahead. It was an exciting start to the morning as we approached this surface active pod and watched on in amazement as both Humpbacks launched into spectacular breaching and pec slapping. Repeating this language over and over throughout the entire morning we could see this pod doing its best to call out to all other whales in the vicinity and attract their attention. A second pod could be observed well over a kilometre away responding with some breaching of their own as the conversation flowed back and forth.
One of the Humpback Whales had damage to its fluke indicting this feisty whale had survived an Orca attack in its younger years. The damage was not server and the scarring many years old as each breach would lift the fluke on landing and show the distinctive rounded edges. The same whale was also the individual doing the majority of the pec slapping as for over an hour we had a commotion of white water as thousands of kilograms of weight was gracefully landed on the waters surface. It is this powerful sound that echoes out and enables other whales to listen in and decide if they want to approach the area or avoid it and today we had three other pods decide to approach. Arriving from a long distance away they were excited to have made their way into the sighting grounds and close to this very surface active pod. They responded with some flirty pec slapping of their own and we wished them well for their time ahead in the peaceful waters just off Fremantle.
