Breaching Perth winter whales was spectacular today as we enjoyed witnessing how a Humpback Whales calls out to find a friend with powerful breaching and elegant pec slapping. It was such a lovely day to be out on the water, a calm sea and slightly warm breeze certainly didn’t feel like we were enjoying the last day of July in the middle of winter. Our first sighting was a very beautiful yearlong who was only tiny and on the move, an initial tail lob established his dominance as he then approached for a closer look. A full body breach caught us all by surprise and this young male was a gentle character, but not afraid to make some noise. He was on the lookout for a nice place to rest and eventually he found exactly what he was looking for as he settled in and would surface stationary to replenish oxygen before disappearing back below again.
A perfect time to tiptoe away and let him rest as we went searching for who else was to be discovered in the sighting grounds. Our second whale was a little older and this juvenile was very interested in us as she approached for a closer look and then shortly afterwards decided it was time to see who was in the area. Launching into spectacular breaching over and over again, we lost count as she did her very best to be noticed. Her breaching would pause momentarily for her to pec slap which is always a very friendly and flirty Language of the Whales. Combing breaching and pec slapping together creates a powerful combination of sound which will motivate other Humpback Whales in the area to approach if they wish and a fantastic way for this lone traveller to find a friend. It was an absolute ripper of a day for all of our Pod Members onboard and extra special as we celebrated two very special birthdays. Happiest of birthday wishes to Pod Members Abby and Natalie!
