Bremer Canyon Displays its Diversity

Whale Watch Western Australia
Bremer Canyon displays its diversity with a spectacular Wildlife Safari today as Whale Watch Western Australia travelled over many sea miles along tracks the Orca have taught us for more than a decade. Early sightings of the brilliant Pilot Whales got everyone excited as they bobbed around the vessel with their perpetual ‘smile’ on their faces as they greeted our guests to their delight. Finding slicks and evidence of an early morning hunt we moved to the south east as distant blows lit up the morning sky though further investigation had us searching again, this time west bound and it wasn’t long before we came across two further slicks close to the shelf, again the Orca failed to appear as they usually would with the size of the slick indicated they were not too far away.

There was a quick glimpse of the luckiest cetacean in Bremer tonight, that of the favoured prey of the Orca, a swiftly moving Beaked Whale appeared and disappeared just as quick but not quick enough for our photography team. Returning to the east a clamour of water exploded as we sighted the small but very entertaining striped dolphins as they put on a speed and acrobatic display which delighted our Pod Members. Then the Orca arrived, very slinky and in obvious stalking mode as we moved gently with them, the Pod was spread and we were thinking of what their next move was and all of a sudden a distant blow indicated Sperm Whales close by.

Further tracking with the Orca indicated they were in fact listening and stalking the Sperm Whale, they will do this for the chance to pilfer squid if the opportunity arises but it wasn’t to be today as the mammoth male Sperm Whale surface a hundred meters from our vessel to reoxygenate. An incredible sight as we spent 10 minutes in awe of the marine goliath, then the moment they are renowned for arrived as the cetacean with the largest brain on the planet tail dived to the amazement of guests onboard. Our last species were the friendly sea lions on Glasse Island, characters that say good morning and good evening to us daily which is fast becoming a favourite of the team. Bremer Canyon is well known for its Orca but days like today show the rich diversity that it has to offer and at times it really is a great display of the spectacular wildlife that frequents our coastline. It’s great to be part of Whale Watch Western Australia!
