Bremer New Year Orca Tours are the perfect way to celebrate and start the year as today we spent time with Kidji and her family including our much loved mascot Chalky! Excitement was brewing as we arrived and were surrounded by dry all the babies of this family who were very excited to see us as they darted in and around us happily. Their day was set to be a busy one which we started with them in The Patch as they did a bit of foraging before it was time for our first surge of the season to the west. Always a thrill to travel with the Orca when they are surfing the swell and allowing the ocean to help them pick up a little extra speed for energy efficiency.
The birdlife can be seen doing the same thing but they work with wind rather than swell as the breeze carries them and enables them to use less of their stored energy and benefit from the readily available wind most days. It was great to be back out in the hunting grounds and observe the familiar movement of the Orca as they covered ground effortlessly and after leaving The Patch for a little while to try and entice prey into the area with their absence it was soon time to return back up towards The Patch. Stopping in for a few social interactions they were travelling at a much easier pace as they worked into the breeze and once arriving back in the heart of the hunting grounds they dispersed and took up stealth mode positions. It was a perfect time to wish them well as they continued their work in securing a good meal for the family pod.
