Bremer Orca Family Gathering

Whale Watch Western Australia

Bremer Orca family gathering was observed today as four different family pods were sighted in The Patch foraging and socialising. It is always great to see when multiple families are busy in the hunting grounds and often it means shortly after arrival we sight the Orca, exactly the case this morning as blows were sighted just as we slowed down. The pods were busy this morning as they covered ground effectively in search of breakfast but amongst the focused Orca we noticed a couple of cheeky males about, Kai and Biggs in particular were busy following the ladies. It is always interesting to see when these males spend some time away from their family to mingle and flirt with females from other family pods.

Biggs was busy travelling behind Queen’s girls as they all came together right alongside us creating a beautiful sight to see. He is such an impressive male with one of the largest dorsal fins in the population, we are sure he is set to impress the ladies with his good looks! Although not much food was found his morning the Orca made the most of the opportunity to socialise with members from the four different family pods. The males will often make the most of these days as a break from their family and an opportunity to build friendships and possible courtships with other females they are not closely related with which is important for future mating opportunities. As the day wore on, the pods gradually began to disperse, each group heading back to its familiar and preferred foraging grounds in The Patch. The males, having spent a day mingling and forging new bonds, returned back to their families as their mindset moved from flirting to foraging as dinner was now on the minds of each Orca pod.
