Bremer Orca Spock spy hop was witnessed today and it was an absolute beauty, a full body spy hop perfectly showing just how much power and elegance these Orca have in every movement. It was amazing to see just how quickly the weather can change after yesterdays severe winds moved through the region. After our day on land we were excited to make our way back out to the Orca sighting grounds. Heading out we had a slight swell residual but overall a very calm day for the south coast and with light winds forecast all day we were looking forward to discovering what there was to find in the Bremer Canyons. A very familiar face surfaced, it was big boy El Notcho travelling with his family pod and they were in cruise control. It was exciting to see them all and have the opportunity of spending some time with this well known Bremer Bay Orca family. Relaxed and looking like their latest travels have resulted in some good food intake, the family came over to great us excitedly.
Mostly adults in this family, it means that the youngsters mature quickly with the constant guidance of the wiser knowledge passed down from older pod members. Spock seemed rather pleased to see us and was excited, launching upwards into a spectacular full body spy hop! Captured perfectly by Pod Member Lisa Albino, the moment was very special to witness as rarely do the Orca in their spy hop get up so high. It is something we have seen from this family before, back in March 2024 we were travelling with the same family pod when Swirl decided to complete the same incredible full body spy hop. We have also observed matriarch Cookie complete the manoeuvre previously and we suspect she may have taught this to her pod members. We are very pleased that they have learnt because it is a stunning and dramatic example of this much loved Orca behaviour. A truly unique and beautiful sight displaying the incredible coordination and strength these Orca have in their ability to move so effortlessly.
