Cetacean Playtime

Whale Watch Western Australia
Cetacean playtime it was today as the Humpbacks and Bottlenose Dolphins enjoyed a social morning while during our midday tour we were welcomed into a very friendly travelling pod of mum and bub. Overnight there has been a decrease in bachelor males moving through the sighting grounds and instead an influx of mum and calf pods which is very exciting to see! Our morning observed two pods that consisted of mum, calf and protective male escort. The first pod was a sweet female calf who was busy rolling in seaweed and along with the adults in her pod chasing after and playing with the Bottlenose Dolphins. The second pod was a gorgeous black bellied male calf who was loving his seaweed playtime and wiggling about at the surface.

It is such a wonderful time of the year as we welcome these babies to the sighting grounds and love watching them rest, play and socialise. Our midday tour was a lovely mum who would lift her fluke with every round out dive ensuring we could easily capture her fluke id. Her lovely little calf was curious and both mum and calf came over to check us out and welcomed us into their pod. Mother whale was travelling and effortlessly made her way through the sighting grounds and out towards Rottnest Island. It is incredible to witness this epic migration that these whales are undertaking and the extremes they will go to in ensuring that their calves have the very best start to life. All of the little ones observed today were healthy, happy and ready for the big adventure that is ahead of them and we hope to see them again as big strong yearlings during next years migration.
