Fremantle Blue Whales were observed today as two enormous Blues travelled less than a kilometre from the shore while the Humpbacks put on a phenomenal day of surface activity! Our morning tour was busy with excitement as three pods communicated with breaching, head lunging and pec slapping for over an hour. Travelling towards Stragglers Reef we watched on as they began to settle in for a rest after a huge morning of surface action. During our return back to the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour a familiar but incredibly exciting sight was observed, two Blue Whales! Rarely sighted in the waters between Rottnest Island and the coastline it made this mornings sighting very special indeed as they travelled less then a kilometre from the Port of Fremantle. Relaxed and finding their way through the shallows we stayed with the Blues until they began to make their way back out towards deeper water and we wished them both the safest of journeys ahead as they too continue to southern waters for their summer feeding season.
Our afternoon and sunset tour was a similar spectacular scene like this morning as mums and calves lit up the Indian Ocean with incredible surface language. Breaching, body lunging, pec slapping and tail lobbing was sighted all around as multiple pods created a surge of excitement. The number of whales sighted today was over 100 individuals with mums and calves as far as the eye could see. It is days like these which are a great joy to see as it is a reflection of how far this population has grown from near extinction back to the largest population of Humpbacks on the planet. Observing such constant Language of the Whales is incredible and shows that these calves have grown well during the winter months and are now full of energy and enthusiasm to practice everything they have learnt over the last few months. Tomorrow will be another fascinating day to see how many pods remain in the sighting grounds and hopefully they will have a good rest tonight and recharge those batteries for tomorrows activities as they enjoy their time in the wonderful sighting grounds off Fremantle.
