Fremantle Harbour whale tours are currently departing daily with Whale Watch Western Australia to see the southern Humpback Whale migration and today was an exciting day with many pods busy in the sighting grounds. Our first encounter was a mum and her little one moving along and they seemed interested in approaching the other pods nearby, but the others were travellers and focusing on departing the resting grounds. Instead the mumma whale decided to settle in and rest with her calf while a bachelor pod continued onwards towards Rottnest Island. A yearling went to approach and join them but it resulted in a couple of powerful tail lobs from the more dominant male, they can be particular about who they allow to join the bachelor pods.
It can be tough for these youngsters to locate a suitable friend to approach of a younger age group with all the enormous mature adults currently migrating south. Just the pod did however begin to form not far away and as we approached they decided we looked rather interesting and came over to say hello. Spy hops, belly rolls, pec slaps and plenty of excitable trumpeting unfolded as all three gathered around us for some playtime. It was such a special interaction to be so close with wild whales and have them just as interested in us as we were with them, a special morning for all of our Pod Members onboard. One last bachelor male approached to join the fun and he was massive, perhaps an older male but still young at heart as he too joined in with the great social interaction they were all having together this morning.
