Fremantle Humpback Whale watch from June to November every years observes the epic annual migration of the largest Humpback Whale population on the planet. It was set to be a picture perfect day with glassy conditions and a big blue sky, perfect conditions for spotting Humpback Whales. Our first pod was a sleepy duo who were both enormous and appeared to be enjoying a very relaxing morning together resting. Lifting their flukes it enabled us to be able to capture fluke id images so we can see if they are familiar faces we have met in the past. Our second pod were in a different mood as they decided it was the perfect morning to gain some attention as they pec slapped their way through the resting grounds. Trying to call in others for a social gathering, an enormous breach was thrown in to get the message across. It captured the attention of the nearby Bottlenose Dolphins who came over to investigate and say hello.
Our midday tour was very much the same as we came across resting mums and calves. One baby was feeding with the sweetest circle pattern around mum before returning back to her to continue the nutrient rich meal of milk. It is extraordinary these females are able to live for such long periods of time without feeding themselves yet provide a few hundred litres of milk to their calf each and everyday. Our second mum and bub were a little more awake as they played together with spy hops and wiggle time for the calf at the surface. A lone adult moved through the area nearby and was on a mission to move through the resting grounds quickly and likely continue southbound today. Our final pod was boisterous with three big adults trumpeting, pec slapping and bubble veiling away their afternoon. It appeared to be a couple of males competing for the attention of the female but it soon became more social which was good to see these three enjoying their afternoon ahead.
