Fremantle Whale sightings are seeing the last of the mums and calves in the final week of Humpback Season 2024 with multiple pods observed today. What a lovely morning spent with our Fremantle whales as we made our way to the sighting grounds. Our first pod was a mother and calf taking it easy, the little calf had more energy than mum so he was rolling around the surface and showing off with a few mini tail lobs. As we sat and waited for our calf to come back to the surface we were delighted to be greeted by our local bottlenose dolphin pod that lives in these waters. They were in a very social mood coming right along side us before venturing off to look for breakfast. The young calf seemed to be looking for the dolphins but didn’t end up finding them so another mini tail lob it was to soak up some playtime while he waits for mum to have a rest. He rolled around lifting his little pec fin which one day will be a tonne in weight. There was a pod of two adult humpbacks hanging around the mum and calf as well, keeping their distance but seemed curious. Mum didn’t seem to phased and was also curious but they didn’t end up coming together and socialising, instead they stayed close by to one and other and respected each others space so mum could rest and baby could have some play time with himself.
This afternoon’s weather was absolutely beautiful with calm waters and a slight warm breeze, it wasn’t long at all before we sighted our first pod. Mum and calf right in close to the shore not far from Leighton beach, Our mother Humpback was resting just below her very curious calf that could not stay away from us and had more surfacing than she needed to just to have a lookout us. The young calf circled our vessel while mum was resting just under us, the calf was starting to get more and more curious coming right up along side us to see what we were about. It is so special for us to build such a strong trust in so little time spent with them just through how we respect their space. They are completely wild animals after all and we ensure we treat them withy the highest respect and in return we get a few months old baby humpback come right up to us. After a while of this little one checking us out we went over to another three separate pods close by and spent some time with them. Ending the tour with a beautiful cruise home as the Freo Doctor winds cooled us all down after a warm day as Alby got some rest too after a busy day socialising.
