Grand Final Whales it was today as the excitement of the AFL Grand Final was matched with the energy of the whales with spectacular breaching, tail lobs and pec slapping! It was set to be an exciting day for many as thousands gathered in Fremantle for the big day ahead and just off the coast of Fremantle we had many pods gathering together for some competition of their own. Bachelor males had arrived and were causing a commotion as amongst the pods there was a female who decided she was keen on getting everyones attention. Needless to say she was the life of the party with spectacular breaching and pec slapping lighting up the sighting grounds.
The boys reacted with tail lobs and inverted tail slapping as they began to shuffle and three seperate pods converged on the area. It was a great example of the Language of the Whales and how some movements are very flirty and friendly, attracting attention towards themselves like the female Humpback was doing. Meanwhile the tail lobs and inverted tail slapping is more dominant as the males showed off towards each other and tried to intimidate the competition that was approaching the female. It is always a wonderful scene as whale watchers to witness these conversations take place and a great opportunity to observe and learn the Language of the Whales. An exhilarating day with the Humpback Whales and it certainly matched the energy of the AFL Grand Final taking place, may the best team win!
