How deep is the Bremer Canyon? The depth of the Bremer Canyon ranges from 1,000 meters to over 4,500 meters, but where the Orca spend the majority of their time tends to be away from the heart of the canyon and its enormous depth range. The Patch is a 5 nautical mile area that the Orca like top spend much of their time in and it has an average depth of 1,000 meters which is ideal for the Orca and their dive range. Today we had the great opportunity to spend time with Cheryl and her family pod who completed a larger hunt prior to our arrival with a large oil slick sighted and a few smaller squid slicks later in the day.
It was lovely to be with the family pod as they were excited to see us and spent most of their day playing and interacting with us happily. The earlier morning meal meant the family could relax and enjoy their day with pod members Fanscar, Alby, B-Slice, Shredder and her new baby Teddy having so much fun today. Approaching our underwater cameras and floating belly up alongside us was all part of how the Orca like to show off and interact with our pod members onboard. Travelling normally, an Orca can find it difficult looking directly up so instead they will roll onto their side or straight over onto their back and then they can get a much clearer view of everyone looking back down towards them.
Another highlight today was Pearl our very friendly Australian Sea Lion who had noticed the fishing vessels return to the harbour and with them a few stray pilchards had escaped from the nets and deck wash down. Pearl is a smart girl and was making the most of this easy meal as she gathered together the fresh pilchards and looked so full! She made sure to come over and say high before offering us a few pilchards and showing off just how clever she is, what a beautiful girl. It was a very social, interactive and fun filled day with our beautiful wildlife who call these waters home and are kind enough to welcome us into their amazing world for a little time each day.
