Humpback and Southern Right Whales sighted off Fremantle today on both our tours making for a very special and unique experience for our Pod Members. Amongst the many Humpback Whale pods in the sighting grounds was a pod of two very large adult Southern Right Whales who we first sighted this morning and were absolutely thrilled to meet! Capturing identification images we were able to confirm neither was the lone Southern Right Whale we met two days ago so it was a fantastic opportunity to document another two visitors of this endangered species to the sighting grounds. It was amazing to witness as they began to move with much curiosity directly towards a Humpback Whale competition pod less than 100 meters away.
Tail lobs and tail slapping unfolded amongst the Humpback Whales as they chased after each other and it was very amusing to see how the Southern Right Whales watched on from their spot overseeing all the other pods around them and the conversations taking place. The midday tour was very much the same as the Southern Right Whales were sighted again as they socialised together with plenty of rolling and drifting at the surface enjoyed as they came in closely to investigate us with much curiosity. Humpback Whales were all around including our final sighting for the afternoon which was a beautiful lone traveller, a mature female who was calling out for a companion with repeated spectacular breaching and pec slapping echoing out through the sighting grounds. Needless today we felt very spoilt today with the incredible sightings we were witness to and what a remarkable opportunity to observe two very special whale species just off Fremantle!
