Humpback calf breaching was the theme of the day as the little ones showed off their best moves with spectacular breaching for all to see. The winds had eased from yesterday and it was going to be an interesting day to see what pods were hanging out in the sighting grounds. Our first sighting was an exciting one as the little silver calf observed back on Wednesday morning surfaced with mum as both look relaxed and well rested. The mother whales will remain in the sighting grounds for a few days generally to relax and recover some of that energy lost on the long journey to this point. The calves especially benefit from a few days of minimal movement and plenty of regular feeding. Weight is gained and the little ones are able to also mingle and socialise with other youngsters during their time here and that is a lot of fun for us to see!
Today both our morning and midday tour was exciting as we watched multiple calves making the most of a full belly of milk as they used that energy to launch into breaching, head lunging and tail lob practice with a few pec slaps thrown in for good measure.The calves love to practice the Language of the Whales every chance they get and it is even more fun when they get to practice alongside another calf. Today it was all about the boys as the black bellied male calf on our morning tour did not stop launching himself above the waters surface as he showed off to the little white bellied calf swimming along with him who would join in occasionally before reverting back to swimming upside down which seemed to be a lot of fun for this little one. Our midday tour observed yet another boisterous male calf who had a big white belly extending up his flanks and was showing off his beautiful breaches over and over as mum guided who calf to a quiet spot. Eventually he was all worn out as mum allowed her little one to enjoy a feed of milk before settling in for some rest time together. A great day out with these beautiful new calves and wonderful to see much excitement and fund being enjoyed amongst the pods.
