Humpback calves exploring Fremantle today as we had a small gathering of mums and bubs enjoying their day and curiously approaching us for a closer look. It was a beautiful spring day and wonderful to see multiple pods moving through the sighting grounds.Our first mum and calf were travelling together and covering ground efficiently, it seemed they were aiming to make their way towards Rottnest Island. Our second pod was a mature female, her lovely calf and protective male escort as all three cruised together happily. It appeared the male had been travelling with them for a while and as the little family pod moved towards the Bottlenose Dolphins things soon turned playful. Twisting and rolling together, they were all having the best time as the dolphins enjoyed a brief interaction before they continued on in search of that next meal.
The mother whale decided we would make a great second entertainment option for her calf as she approached and presented her baby to everyone onboard. It is a special interaction when a mother whale presents her calf to you, gently guiding her baby towards our vessel and allowing her little one to have a closer look. The calf was very excited with tiny baby trumpets on each exhale which is simply the sweetest thing in the world! The male escort was patient and even though he would have probably preferred mum and calf to be less interested in us, he allowed for them both to approach. He also snuck in a cheeky look as well as his curiosity got the better of him and a great example of how those guarding instincts always remain with the bachelor males, they also love to have some social time! A very special interaction with one last pod being a lone traveller lifting their fluke gracefully on each round out dive providing the perfect opportunity to capture a clear fluke identification image and complete another special day with the whales.
