Humpback migratory path along the coastline of Perth is welcoming whales everyday with a lovely mix of yearlings and mature adults on the march today. Our morning was spent with the babies of last season, all grown up and recently separated from their mums with a huge journey ahead of them. It is a very big part of their lives the next few months as for the first time in their lives they are travelling without the guidance of their mum but thankfully she has taught them everything they need to know for survival. The youngsters today were all in migration mode as they covered ground efficiently and one in particular took some time to come over and say hello to all of our Pod members onboard which was very sweet. Our midday tour was the same migratory path momentum but this time it was two enormous bachelor males who were in cruise control.
Covering ground effortlessly, there whales have left they mum many years and possibly a few decades ago so have become accustomed to the life of a nomadic Humpback Whale. Cool, calm and collected these boys were all set to continue southbound today as they cruised past Rottnest Island. At their age and size the journey ahead is a lot less complicated as the risk of Orca attack is minimal, the Orca would be very unlikely to bother attempting an attack on two battle hardened male Humpback Whales who would put up a fearless fight against these apex predators. Instead it is the yearlings we met earlier today who have to be very wary of the Orca and keep their travel as quiet and low profile as possible so as not to be detected. A unique day to spend with two very different age groups within the current Humpback migratory path.
