Humpback southern migration begins this weekend and what a perfect start with happy Humpback Whales and playful dolphins enjoying this phase of the annual migration. A light breeze ruffled the waters surface in the early morning but eased throughout the day as we searched through the sighting grounds and came across a pod of three, two large adults and a cheeky juvenile making for an unusual pod structure. Generally these younger whales will hangout with others of a similar age group but not this fellow, he was hanging out with the older bachelor males today. Nearby bachelor pods meandered through the area with plenty of trumpeting and a few tail slaps with our final pod for the morning being a special one.
Two yearlings were socialising with a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins and having the best time as they all came over to greet us excitedly. Our midday tour had a very similar dolphin theme as we came across a pod of two young adults who had located the Bottlenose Dolphins. Excitedly they chased after them and eventually caught up to the pod as they mingled together before one adult dolphin peeled away from the others and kept the Humpbacks occupied as they chased after him in play mode. All three would end up around our bow before circling back to our stern curiously, it was lovely to be part of the fun! A beautiful way to complete a special weekend, our first for the southern part of the Humpback whale migration and we are so excited to see what the days and weeks ahead have for us to discover and whales to meet.
