Intense Perth Humpback competition pods were rumbling through the sighting grounds today at such a remarkable intensity and speed, it was astounding to witness and be part of the pod! Our morning began with wonderfully relaxed mums and calves enjoying their day and soaking in some relax time in the resting grounds. Thankfully they were a very long way from what had formed into an incredible competition pod with over a dozen whales charging after the female who was leading them on a crazy chase. Keeping ahead of the boys, she would change direction every time they started to get closer which kept them all on their flukes! It was incredible to witness the power and speed amongst the boys with such intense energy for later in the season.
Excitingly we had a very similar situation unfold during our midday tour as we firstly met a mum, her calf and escort who had an unwanted visitor in that of a bachelor male. He was trying to get closer tot he female but the male was blocking him and mumma whale was smart as she spied the local Bottlenose Dolphins and headed towards them for some social time. It relaxed the interaction between the boys and now all of them began to twist and roll together with the dolphins playfully. A beautiful sight to witness and how smart was mother whale seeing the opportunity to settle the boys with the distraction of the dolphins, hopefully her calf learnt the important lesson. A fairly short distance away was yet another incredibly intense comp pod with fourteen whales this time competing, top speeds reached were just over thirty kilometres per hour! A very high energy and exciting day out on the water with a lovely mix of precious new calves and powerful competition pods.
