Killer Whale Search

Whale Watch Western Australia

Killer Whale search for food can take up an incredible amount of their day, anywhere from fifty to ninety percent! Today we witnessed Alki and her family working hard to find the sustenance they need for the health of their family pod. The matriarchs need to show the family pod the best locations to secure food which can be challenging with the changes in seasons, weather and prey movement. Thankfully these wise females remember seasons past and this wisdom enables them to have confidence in deciding where and when they forage. It was a challenging day for them as although the family looked high and low they were not able to secure a meal. Some rest was enjoyed but it was soon back to foraging as their discipline was clear to see as the whole family worked together diligently.

It was exciting to see new calf Matilda enjoying all the excitement that comes with foraging and learning what it takes to be an apex predator. Thankfully, Matilda has many years of growing and maturing ahead before her role in the family becomes more serious and she is called upon to help with foraging duties. Her only concern now is mum, milk and play! The rest of the family were busy and maintained their focus, but it seemed today fishing was lean and that can happen o all good fisherman. The apex predators of our ocean have not only great hunting skills but unmatched patience as they can stake out a foraging ground for as long as it takes before their next meal opportunity appear.
