WHALE WATCHING

in Hillary's

Hillary’s is a stunning beachside suburb of Western Australia and one of the best places to go whale watching. During the months of September to December Hillary’s is host to the largest migration of Humpback Whales in the world as over forty five thousand whales migrate south towards Antarctica. The sheltered waters found off the coastline from Hillary’s provides the ideal resting grounds as Humpback Whales congregate to socialise and recoup. Spending their time relaxing, resting and nurturing their newborn calves in these pristine waters provides an ideal Whale Watch opportunity during the spring with the Humpback Whales of Western Australia.

Hillary’s is easily accessible by car, public transport or taxi depending on where you are travelling from. Transperth has regular train and bus options while Taxis and Ubers are also readily available. Tour guides and vans can also be hired for a more personalised transport experience.

The whale watching season in Hillary’s has two different times of the year available to join our guaranteed sighting tours. During the Autumn months we can observe the northern Blue Whale migration while during the Spring we sight the southern Humpback Whale migration.

March - May

The only tour of its kind in Australia, our Perth Canyon Blue Whale tour observes the largest known creature to have ever lived feasting on krill in the waters of the Perth Canyon. A full day experience departing during the Autumn months as we meet the Blue Whales feeding just twenty seven nautical miles from the coastline of Hillary’s in the Perth Canyon. A unique opportunity to meet one of the worlds true treasures.

September - December

Spring marks the beginning of the southern Humpback Whale migration as these incredible whales make their journey back south towards Antarctica in time for the feeding season. The winter has been spent breeding, socialising and giving birth to the next generation in the warmer waters found in the Kimberly region. The change of season begins the southern migration back along the coastline of Western Australia as they enjoy time in the sheltered waters off Hillary’s. Join The Pod®️ and meet the remarkable Humpbacks of Western Australia.

The weather in Hillary’s during the whale watching seasons is sunshine and warm days. Humpback Whales along Perth’s coastline celebrates the beginning of Spring and weather will start to warm with an average temperature of 12 to 24°C (53 to 75°F).

Blue Whales

The largest mammal to have ever graced our planet, the Blue Whale is even larger than any known dinosaur. Impressive and peaceful, these gigantic whales rely heavily on the feeding grounds located in the Perth Canyon to provide sustenance to carry them towards their next feeding and nursery grounds located further north in the Banda Sea where they will also spend the winter giving birth to and rearing baby Blue Whales before heading back towards Antarctica for summer. During September to November we can also occasionally sight them on their return journey south.

Humpback Whales

The big, boisterous and graceful Humpback Whales are a favourite amongst whale watchers of the world due to their energetic and acrobatic displays as they communicate the Language of the Whales. During the spring months they are migrating back south towards Antarctica where they will spend summer feeding on krill. The top of Western Australia is their nursery ground where they will spend winter and give birth to the next generation of Humpbacks and this epic migration every year takes up to six months for each individual and approximately 13,000 kilometres of travel!

A fantastic location for gourmet dining, boutique shopping and sunsets by the sea as you will find many different ways to spend your day before or after your whale watch experience.
