Massive Beaked Whale taken during a powerful hunt before a second, smaller Beaked Whale was also successfully taken on another incredible hunting day for the Bremer Bay Killer Whales. It was a very beautiful morning with a big blue sky, calm sea and fast transit time to the sighting grounds. A commotion was underway on our arrival as surging erupted and huge plumes of white water filled the horizon with the hunt so powerful it was clearly visible even over two kilometres away. The final hit was seen as a large amount of white water stained red from the impact and kill meant the Orca had been successful in their objective. The ocean turned a greenish tinge as the startling amount of blood in the water indicated the huge size of this Beaked Whale as Lucy towed it alongside her and it was so large that it made Lucy appear small.
The family fed happily and took their time as they consumed and shared their hard earned meal as they fed around and underneath us excitedly. The feeding unfolded for a long time before they seemed to start rushing their meal and we soon knew why, a second hunt was underway! Surging powerfully back up towards The Patch it was clear that there was a number of Orca families targeting this area today as Lucy and her family did their best to catchup with the hunt unfolding ahead of them but it was over quickly. Appearing to be a smaller Beaked Whale, Cookie and Cooee along with a few of Queens girl had combined forces to secure this meal and they had also proven successful in their hunt today. Hundreds of birds were well fed today along with sharks and fish who gathered in the water space below the Orca for falling scraps from the sharing of their meal. The pods started to move slowly back to the west with some very relaxed feeding and curious approaches enjoyed, we were also exhausted after such a high octane morning of hunting with the Orca!
