New Bremer Bay Orca Calf Sighted

Whale Watch Western Australia

New Bremer Bay Orca calf sighted today as mother Moonbeam proudly introduced her new baby to us and how wonderful to meet the newest edition to this special family pod. It was a lovey day out with Orca greeting us on our arrival as Cheryl and her family approached to say hello. Giovanni and B-Slice have once again filled out as their dorsal fins continue to stabilise and grow stronger. The boys were relaxed and looking great along with the rest of their family pod as they kept busy foraging throughout the day. Nearby we could observe Kidji and her family pod also foraging in The Patch as both families covered ground efficiently. It is always beautiful to watch their streamlined movement and efficiency when working together in this way.

Later in the day we had the opportunity to join with Kidji and noticed travelling with one of her Pod Members Moonbeam a brand new edition to the family. The young calf was happily travelling next to mum and looked to be full of much excitement and enthusiasm. The family approached and allowed the little one to have a look at us, we were all very excited to meet this new member of the Bremer Bay Oral population. After the recent news of Orca Tahlequah of the Southern Resident community in the Puget Sound losing a second calf shortly after birth it hits home how fortunate we are to work with such an incredibly healthy population of wild Orca. Every calf is precious and we hope that in the years ahead the Orca populations around the world can recover and that one day Tahlequah will be able to welcome a healthy baby once again as she did with her first two documented calves. Continuing to monitor and study the Orca of Bremer Bay is an important step in learning more about this unique population and ensuring we can keep a close eye on the health of each individual we get to spend time with regularly.
